Can a Brit Drive in Qatar? — Yes with an IDP, Zero Alcohol & a Side Switch
United Kingdom
Qatar
Yes — a British licence holder can drive in Qatar on a visit, with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. Two things catch UK drivers out: the drink-drive limit is an absolute zero, and Qatar drives on the right, so you switch sides.
Can a British licence holder drive in Qatar? Yes — for a visit your UK licence is accepted, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. The home licence covers short tourist stays; if you settle for longer you would convert to a Qatari licence, but that is not a concern for a normal trip. So far, straightforward. Two specific things, though, deserve more attention than the paperwork.
The first is alcohol. Qatar enforces a 0.0 limit — an absolute zero — and drink-driving is treated as a serious criminal matter, not a fine-and-move-on offence. For a British driver used to a 0.08 threshold, the rule is simple and unbending: if you have had anything at all to drink, do not get behind the wheel. There is no margin to misjudge.
The second is the side of the road. The UK drives on the left; Qatar drives on the right. Doha is built around large, fast multi-lane roundabouts and interchanges, and getting the side switch wrong on one of those is exactly where visitors come unstuck. Take your bearings on quieter roads first, and be deliberate about which exit and which lane you need before you commit, because the traffic moves quickly and assertively.
On the documented limits: towns are posted at 60 km/h, rural roads at 80, and motorways at 120 — a touch above what you are used to at home. Speed and red-light cameras are widespread and well-enforced, and fines arrive reliably, often before you have left the country. Fuel is very cheap at around $0.48 a litre, so cost is the least of your worries. The general emergency number is 112.
Qatar’s roads themselves are modern and well-surfaced, so the challenge is behaviour and the rules rather than condition. Zero. Qatar enforces a 0.0 alcohol limit and treats drink-driving extremely seriously — there is no allowance, so do not drive after any alcohol at all.
The right. As a British driver used to the left, the side switch is the main adjustment — be deliberate at roundabouts, of which Doha has many.
