Can an Indian Drive in Qatar on an Indian Licence? — IDP Recommended, Zero Alcohol

Plenty of Indian travellers and short-stay visitors hire a car in Qatar, and the rules sit somewhere between familiar and strict. Here is what actually matters, verdict first.

Driving in Qatar on an Indian licence

You can drive in Qatar on your Indian licence as a visitor, with an IDP recommended to carry alongside it for the early weeks of your stay. The International Driving Permit is the standardised translation rental desks and police expect to see, so arrange it in India before you fly — you cannot get one in Qatar. Keep the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport as a set. The moment this changes is residency: if you move to Qatar rather than visit, you must convert to a local licence.

Zero means zero on alcohol

This is the rule Indian drivers most need to internalise. Qatar’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.0 — an absolute, enforced zero, and stricter than the 0.03 you may be used to at home. There is no “one drink” margin, no discretion. Combined with Qatar’s wider restrictions on alcohol, the only safe approach is to keep driving days completely dry. Penalties are severe and not worth testing.

You switch to the right, and the highways are fast

India drives on the left; Qatar drives on the right. The danger window is your first day — joining Doha’s wide, fast multi-lane roads, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or a reflex glance in the wrong direction. Limits are generous once you are settled: 60 km/h in town, 80 on rural roads, 120 on the highways. Radar and speed cameras are heavily used and fines arrive reliably, so the high limits are not an invitation to drift past them. Fuel is cheap at around $0.48/litre, and the emergency number is 112.
