Quick Answer

Americans drive on the right in Portugal, so there's no side switch, and a US licence works with an International Driving Permit alongside it. The trap nobody warns you about is the electronic-only toll roads — drive under a gantry without the rental's transponder set up and the unpaid-toll fines stack up after you've flown home.

Good news first: Portugal drives on the right, just like home, so there’s no nerve-wracking side switch to manage. That makes it one of the easier European countries for an American to pick up a car in — which is exactly why the thing that actually catches US visitors is administrative, not physical.

It’s the tolls. Several of Portugal’s motorways, most famously the A22 along the Algarve, are fully electronic: there are no booths, no tickets, just overhead gantries that read your vehicle as you pass at speed. If your rental car isn’t set up with a working transponder or a registered payment card, those charges go unpaid, and the penalties — which can multiply per crossing — chase you through the rental company weeks after you’ve returned the keys. Ask explicitly at pickup how the toll system is handled on your specific car, and keep the documentation. Booth-based motorways (the older blue-and-white “Portagem” lanes) coexist with electronic ones, so it pays to know which you’re on.

On the licence side, your US permit is accepted, but carry an International Driving Permit with it — it’s the recognised translation for a non-EU licence and saves friction at the desk or a roadside stop. Sort it at home; you can verify exactly what’s needed with our Driving Permit Checker.

The road itself is straightforward. Limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 on rural roads and 120 on motorways, with both fixed and mobile cameras in play. Speeding penalties scale from about EUR 60 to EUR 300 depending on severity. The drink-drive limit is 0.05 BAC — under the US 0.08, and a strict 0.02 for newer drivers — so plan around zero if you’re driving. A warning triangle and reflective vest are mandatory and will be in the car.

Fuel costs around $1.88 a litre, and 112 covers all emergencies. For the toll map, motorway specifics and city parking, read the full Portugal driving guide before you collect the car — the five minutes you spend on tolls is the best-value preparation you can do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your US licence is accepted, but an IDP is recommended and should be carried with it — it provides the official translation that Portuguese police and rental desks expect for a non-EU licence.

Many Portuguese motorways, including the Algarve's A22, are electronic-only with no toll booths. You pass under a gantry and the charge is read automatically, so your rental must have a working transponder or registered card — confirm this at pickup or you'll face unpaid-toll penalties later.

Portugal's limit is 0.05 BAC, below the 0.08 typical in the US, and 0.02 for drivers in their first three years. Fines for speeding run from EUR 60 to EUR 300 depending on how far over you are.
