Portugal on a US Licence 2026: No IDP, but Watch the Tolls

Americans searching this usually want one answer: yes, your US licence is good in Portugal. The State Department’s Portugal page says it directly: “You may drive with a valid U.S. driver’s license for up to six months.” For a permit anyway, it points you to AAA or the National Auto Club. Portugal drives on the right, as you do at home.

Six months, and then?

The six-month window suits a holiday or a long stay as a visitor. If you plan to settle, the clock changes: Portuguese rules call for exchanging a licence within 90 days of taking up residence. Reference data also note that a US licence is valid on its own only when it is relatively recent, and the rule involves the holder’s age and how long ago it was issued. Check the issue date on your card before you fly. Keep your passport with you as proof of when you arrived.

Why the road demands attention

The State Department notes that Portugal has expanded its motorway network with well-built roads, which cut accidents and deaths, but its road-accident fatality rate is still high. Tolls: read the gantry rules before you leave

Several motorways, the Algarve’s A22 among them, take payment electronically with no booths. A gantry reads your car as you drive under it, so the car needs a working transponder or a registered payment card. At pickup, ask how the system is handled for your specific vehicle and keep the paperwork. If a charge goes unpaid, the bill can reach you through the rental company weeks after you fly home. Some older motorways still use booth lanes, so watch the signs.

• Speeding, driving under the influence and holding a phone are all illegal, and fines are substantial.
• Seatbelts are mandatory for the driver and all passengers.
• Small children must be in a child seat in the rear, belts fastened.
• After an accident, leave the vehicle where it is and call the police straight away.
