Yes. GOV.UK says you can use a UK photocard licence in Portugal; a paper licence may need swapping for a photocard or an IDP alongside it. Traffic keeps right, the alcohol limit is 0.05 (England has 0.08) and the emergency number is 112.
You do not need to hunt for an IDP before flying to Portugal. GOV.UK says you can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Portugal. The old advice that post-Brexit drivers must carry a permit is not what the government now says. What matters more is the side of the road, the alcohol limit and the toll system.
Photocard, paper licence and your own car
If you still have a paper licence, GOV.UK says you may need to update it to a photocard, or get the correct version of the IDP as well. Photocard holders have nothing extra to buy. Rental firms can still set their own rules, so ask at booking what the desk wants to see. Taking your own car? GOV.UK allows UK-registered vehicles for up to 183 days in any 12-month period, strictly for tourism, with no loaning the car to anyone else. If you want to stay longer, you must apply to Portuguese Customs to have it legally imported, and you will be fined if you leave the country without it. The same advice asks UK drivers to check whether they need a UK sticker on the car.
Keeping right after a lifetime on the left
Britain drives on the left; Portugal drives on the right. Junction habits, lane choice on pulling away and the direction of roundabouts all reverse. The dangerous spots in the first hour are petrol station exits and roundabouts in towns. Choose quiet roads for the first stretch and say the lane aloud at each turn.

Motorways run 5 mph above the 70 mph limit at home, and rural roads are 90 km/h, which is close to your 60 mph. The one that catches people is the town limit, which looks higher than 30 mph on a slow day.
A tighter alcohol limit
Portugal’s limit is 0.05, compared with 0.08 in England and Wales. Treat it as zero. A pint with lunch and a drive afterwards can end in a fine and a lost licence.

In the boot: a vest is compulsory
Two items are legally required in a Portuguese car: a reflective vest and a warning triangle. In Britain these are recommended, not required. Rental cars normally have both. If you drive your own car, add them before the ferry or the flight with a hired vehicle.
Tolls
Many motorways use electronic tolls. GOV.UK tells drivers to understand how tolls work and points to the Toll Payment Portal if you think you used a toll road without paying. Ask the rental company whether the car has a transponder, so that charges do not arrive later with an admin fee attached.
