Portugal on a Polish Licence — No IDP Needed, Just Mind the Tolls

For a Polish driver this is one of the easy ones. Poland is in the EU, so your national licence is fully valid in Portugal with no International Driving Permit needed — carry your licence and your ID or passport, and the paperwork side is done. Portugal also drives on the right, the same as home, so there is no side-switch to relearn. That clears the two things most cross-border trips worry about, leaving you to focus on a couple of Portugal-specific quirks.

The tolls are the real catch

Portugal’s motorway tolling is where unprepared visitors get stung. Several routes — particularly former free motorways now charged electronically — have no booths at all: overhead gantries read a transponder and bill it automatically. In a hire car, check whether a toll device is fitted and registered; if it is not, you can drive a gantry-only road, never see a booth, and receive a penalty for the unpaid toll weeks later. Ask the rental desk to confirm the toll arrangement before you leave the lot.

Speeds and the cost of getting them wrong

The motorway limit is 120 km/h, noticeably lower than the 140 km/h Polish motorways allow, so ease off the cruise control. Towns are 50 and rural roads 90, with both fixed and mobile cameras in regular use. A speeding penalty here ranges widely — roughly €60 to €300 depending on how far over you are — so it is worth respecting the posted number. The drink-drive limit is 0.05, more permissive than Poland’s strict 0.02; do not read that as licence to drink, but be aware the threshold is different.

A few practical notes

Fuel is on the pricier side at around $1.88 a litre, so the toll-free national roads can be worth it for both cost and scenery on a relaxed trip. The emergency number is 112, the same as at home.
