Portugal on an Irish Licence — No IDP, but You Switch to the Right

Portugal asks little of an Irish driver on paper and one big thing in practice. No permit, no translation, no stamp: the licence in your wallet is enough. The big thing is the side of the road. Everything else on this page is the small print around those two facts.

An Irish licence needs nothing added

Ireland and Portugal are both EU member states, so your Irish licence is valid in Portugal with no IDP and no translation. Bring the licence and your passport and you have met every legal requirement. Rental firms can set their own conditions, so read the booking terms, but the law does not ask for more.

Driving on the right after a lifetime on the left

Ireland drives on the left; Portugal drives on the right. This is the change that catches Irish visitors out, and the risky moments come on day one: leaving a petrol station, entering a roundabout that now flows anticlockwise, and the instinctive glance the wrong way at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads rather than central Lisbon. At each turn, say the lane you want out loud until “right” stops feeling odd. The motorways are good and the pace is relaxed, which makes the switch easier than in busier countries.

One habit worth building at once: with the steering wheel on the left of the car, you sit next to the centre line, not the kerb. If you are ever unsure which lane you belong in after a turn, follow the car ahead and put yourself where its driver sits.

Speeds you will recognise, and one you will not

Irish rural limits changed in 2025, so a driver who has been on the new 60 km/h local roads may find Portugal’s 90 km/h open roads feel fast. Signs always override the table.

Alcohol: same number, firm checks

The limit is 0.05, identical to Ireland’s. For an Irish driver there is nothing to recalibrate. Checks are real, so nothing is the safer count.

Fines side by side

Portuguese fines are broader in range than Irish fixed charges:

Tolls

Portugal’s motorways are largely tolled, and some routes use electronic-only tolling with no booths, so you cannot simply pay cash at a barrier. Kit and numbers

Portugal requires a warning triangle and a reflective vest in the car, where Ireland only recommends them. A fire extinguisher and first-aid kit are recommended.
