Portugal on an Irish Licence — No IDP, but You Switch to the Right

For Irish drivers, Portugal is an easy and rewarding place to drive — good motorways, a relaxed driving culture and no licence paperwork to arrange. The trip asks one real thing of you: get comfortable on the right. After that, the only wrinkle is the toll system, which works differently from anything at home.

Your Irish licence is all you need

Ireland and Portugal are both EU member states, so your Irish licence is valid in Portugal with no IDP and no translation. Bring the licence and your passport and you have met every legal requirement. Your entitlements carry across unchanged.

The side switch is the adjustment

Ireland drives on the left; Portugal drives on the right. This is the one change that genuinely catches Irish visitors out, and the risky moments come on day one: exiting a petrol station, taking a roundabout that now flows anticlockwise, and the instinctive glance the wrong way at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads rather than central Lisbon, and be deliberate at every turn until “right” stops feeling odd. Tolls work differently here

Portugal’s motorways are largely tolled, and some routes use electronic-only tolling with no toll booths — you cannot simply pay cash at a barrier. Speeds, alcohol and costs

Motorways run to 120 km/h, rural roads 90, towns 50 — close to home. The alcohol limit is the same 0.05 you drive under in Ireland, so no recalibration there, though enforcement is firm.
