Quick Answer

Your German EU licence is valid in Portugal with no IDP needed, and the alcohol limit matches home at 0.05. The two changes are a firm 120 km/h motorway ceiling and Portugal's electronic toll system, including unmanned gantries you cannot pay at.

Portugal is one of the most relaxed countries in Europe to drive as a German visitor. Same right-hand traffic, the same 0.05 alcohol limit, an EU licence that needs nothing extra, and roads our data rates “Easy” — good motorways and an unhurried local style. The thing to get right before you set off is not a rule of the road but the way you pay for it.

Tolls, including the gantries with no booth

Portugal’s motorways are mostly tolled, and there are two systems running side by side. The conventional A motorways use staffed booths or the Via Verde lane. But a set of routes — the former SCUT motorways, common in the north and the Algarve hinterland — are electronic-only: there is no booth to stop at, a gantry simply reads your number plate, and you are expected to have arranged payment in advance. A German rental typically comes with a transponder fitted; if it does not, an unpaid electronic toll turns into a penalty notice that can follow you home. Ask the rental desk explicitly how tolls are handled before you drive away.

A firm 120 ceiling

After the Autobahn, the discipline is mental: Portugal’s motorway limit is a fixed 120 km/h, enforced by fixed and mobile cameras, with no derestricted stretches. Rural roads are 90 and towns 50. The driving culture is calmer than German traffic but lane discipline on two-lane roads is looser, so leave room for slower local traffic and tractors on regional routes.

Numbers worth knowing

The alcohol limit is 0.05, the same as Germany, so nothing to relearn there. A minor speeding offence runs roughly €60–300 depending on the margin; our speeding fine calculator gives the Portuguese figure. Fuel is on the dear side at about €1.88/litre.

You need only carry a warning triangle and reflective vest — confirm your licence status on the driving permit checker and read the full rules on the Portugal driving guide. Emergencies are 112.

Check if your licence is valid

Most motorways use staffed or Via Verde booths, but some (the former SCUT roads) are electronic-only with no booths — your plate is read by a gantry. Rentals usually carry a transponder; confirm with the desk so you do not get a fine by post in Germany.
