Portugal is one of the gentler places in Europe for a Canadian to take the wheel — you drive on the right, the motorways are excellent, signage is clear and the overall pace is unhurried. The country earns its “easy” rating. The genuine pitfalls are administrative rather than about driving skill, and the first one catches people before they even notice.

The tolls you cannot see

Portugal’s motorway tolling is the thing that surprises visitors most. Some routes use conventional booths, but others are electronic-only — there is no barrier and nowhere to pay, and your number plate is simply read and billed. Drive through unprepared in your own car and the charge can resurface as a penalty. In a rental, this is usually handled by a fitted transponder (often a “Via Verde”-style device), but you must confirm at pickup that one is installed and how charges are passed on, or you risk admin fees on top of the toll later.

Paperwork and the alcohol line
