Quick Answer

British drivers can use a UK licence in Poland — an IDP is sometimes asked for by rental desks but not legally required for short visits. The real adjustments are switching to right-hand traffic and dropping from the UK's 0.08 alcohol limit to Poland's strict 0.02.

Two things make Poland feel different from the moment a British driver collects the keys, and neither is the paperwork. Your UK licence is accepted; an IDP is occasionally asked for at rental counters and is worth carrying to head off a dispute, but it is not a legal must for a holiday. The adjustments that matter are physical and behavioural.

Driving on the right

The UK drives on the left; Poland drives on the right, and your first day is the danger window. The reflexes that trip people up are predictable: glancing the wrong way at a junction, drifting toward the kerb on a quiet road, and joining a roundabout that now flows clockwise. Take the first hour somewhere undemanding rather than central Kraków, and make a habit of saying “right” out loud at every turn until it stops feeling wrong. Left-hand-drive cars also change where you sit relative to the centre line — give yourself extra room on the nearside.

A 0.08 to 0.02 alcohol cliff

This is the legal trap. England, Wales and Northern Ireland allow up to 0.08 BAC; Poland’s limit is 0.02 — roughly a quarter of what you may treat as acceptable at home. A single pint that would be legal in Manchester puts you over the line in Warsaw, and Polish police run frequent random breath checks. Treat it as zero. The penalties above the threshold are severe and escalate quickly.

Fast roads and the speeds

Motorways are posted at 140 km/h, the EU’s highest and well above the UK’s 70 mph (112 km/h), so it is easy to find yourself going faster than instinct expects. Off the motorways, expect aggressive overtaking and heavy lorry traffic on single-carriageway national roads. Fixed and mobile cameras are common; a minor speeding fine starts around PLN 50 (≈ €12) and climbs — the speeding fine calculator maps the bands.

Petrol is about €1.48/litre, cheaper than the UK. Confirm your licence position on the driving permit checker, read the equipment rules on the Poland driving guide, and remember the single emergency number is 112.

Yes. A UK licence is accepted for tourist stays in Poland. An IDP is occasionally requested by rental companies and is cheap insurance against disputes, but it is not a legal requirement for short visits.

Check if your licence is valid

The right. Coming from the UK, your highest-risk moments are roundabouts, junctions and pulling out of car parks during the first day — go deliberately and check the correct way first.

0.02 BAC, far below the UK's 0.08 (England, Wales and NI). Effectively no alcohol before driving; Polish police breath-test routinely.
