Quick Answer

Your Spanish EU licence is valid in Poland with no IDP needed. The two things that catch Spanish drivers are the 140 km/h motorway limit — the highest in the EU — and a 0.02 alcohol limit, less than half of Spain's 0.05.

For a Spanish driver, Poland is one of the easier corridors in Europe: same right-hand traffic, the same 112 emergency line, and an EU licence that needs no extra paperwork. What changes is the pace of the road and the margin you have at the wheel after dinner.

The fastest motorways in the EU

Poland posts 140 km/h on its A-class motorways — the highest legal limit anywhere in the Union, and 20 above the 120 you know from Spanish autovías. The newer A1, A2 and A4 corridors are genuinely good and traffic moves at that speed, but expressways (the S-roads) drop to 120 and the change is often signed without much warning. The bigger surprise is what shares the road with you: away from the motorway network, single-carriageway national roads carry heavy truck traffic and impatient overtaking, which is where most tourist near-misses happen. Plan long hops on the A-roads and treat the older national routes with more caution than the 90 km/h sign suggests.

A 0.02 limit, not Spain’s 0.05

This is the rule that quietly catches Spanish visitors. Poland enforces a 0.02 BAC limit — less than half of Spain’s 0.05 — and a glass of wine with lunch can put you over it. Police run frequent roadside breath checks, and the consequences for a positive test are heavier than the number implies: fines, points and, above a higher threshold, licence retention. The safe approach here is simply none before driving.

Speed enforcement and the fine

Fixed cameras and unmarked mobile patrols both operate, and the motorway speed makes it easy to drift over. A minor speeding offence starts at around PLN 50 (≈ €12), but the penalty tariff steepens fast for larger margins. If you want to sanity-check what a given speed would cost, our speeding fine calculator runs the Polish bands.

Petrol sits near €1.48/litre, cheaper than Spain, with supermarket forecourts the best value. Your EU licence is good for stays up to 12 months — confirm your exact status on the driving permit checker — and the full rule set, including the winter-tyre position and required triangle and vest, is on the Poland driving guide. Dial 112 for any emergency.
