Quick Answer

A Dutch licence is valid in Poland with no IDP — same right-hand side, same EU rules. The big jump is speed — Polish motorways run at 140 km/h against the Dutch 100 — while the drink limit tightens to a near-dry 0.02, and a triangle, vest and fire extinguisher are mandatory.

For a Dutch driver, Poland flips the usual expectation: the roads are faster, not slower, and the trip is cheaper. The licence and the side of the road stay the same, so the adjustment is entirely about pace, alcohol and the kit you must carry.

A big jump in motorway speed

The Netherlands runs a strict 100 km/h on most motorways. Poland posts 140 km/h — the highest standing limit in the EU — with expressways at 120, open roads at 90 and towns at 50. That is a real change of tempo, and it rewards keeping your distance: between the motorways you will meet aggressive overtaking and heavy truck traffic on single-carriageway routes, where the gap between fast cars and slow lorries does more damage than the limit. Faster does not mean looser; cameras and patrols enforce throughout.

Stricter on drink, and more to carry

Poland’s alcohol limit is 0.02 against the Dutch 0.05 — close to zero, so nothing before driving is the safe rule. Enforcement is active and penalties rise quickly. Equipment is mandatory in a way it is not at home: you must carry a warning triangle, reflective vest and fire extinguisher, and roadside checks do look for them. Speeding fines start around PLN 50 (≈ EUR 12) for 10 km/h over and climb with speed — run any figure through the Speeding Fine Calculator before assuming it is minor.

Before you set off

Fuel is around $1.48/litre, noticeably cheaper than the Netherlands. The general emergency number is 112 (police 997, ambulance 999). Keep your licence, passport and rental documents to hand for routine checks. The full rule set is on our Poland driving guide, and you can confirm your paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your Dutch EU licence is valid in Poland as it stands, on the same right-hand side of the road. No International Driving Permit is required.

Check if your licence is valid

Considerably. Poland posts 140 km/h on motorways — the EU's highest — against the Netherlands' 100. Expressways run at 120, open roads at 90 and towns at 50.

A near-dry 0.02 BAC, well below the Netherlands' 0.05 — treat it as zero. A triangle, vest and fire extinguisher are mandatory, and a small overspeed fine starts around PLN 50.
