Poland on an Irish Licence — The Right-Side Switch & a 0.02 Limit

Poland is an easy country for an Irish driver on paper — an EU licence, no permit, cheap fuel — but it asks for the one adjustment that matters most behind the wheel: you change the side of the road. Get that right in the first day and the rest is straightforward.

Ireland keeps to the left; Poland keeps to the right. Every roundabout turns the opposite way, every overtake moves to the other side, and the reflex glance before pulling out points the wrong direction until you retrain it. The danger window is the first hour and the relaxed moments after — a petrol-station exit, a quiet rural junction, the point where concentration drops. Take your first session on calm roads near the rental depot, say “drive right” out loud at each turn, and let the new habit settle before any city traffic.

Faster roads, stricter on drink, more to carry

Once the side is sorted, the rest is detail. Polish motorways run at 140 km/h — the EU’s highest posted limit, well above Ireland’s 120 — with open roads at 90 and towns at 50. Watch the single-carriageway stretches, where aggressive overtaking and truck traffic are the real risk. The alcohol limit is 0.02 against Ireland’s 0.05, so treat it as none before driving; enforcement is active. Poland also requires a warning triangle, reflective vest and fire extinguisher in the car, checked at the roadside.
