Can an Indian Drive in Poland? — Yes with an IDP, but You Switch Sides

Poland is an easy, affordable European country to explore by car, and Indian visitors are well catered for once two things are sorted: the right permit, and the mental flip to driving on the right. The licence question is the simple part. The side switch is what deserves your attention.

The verdict on your Indian licence

You can drive in Poland on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. The IDP is the standard translation that rental clerks and police expect to see, so keep it with your Indian licence and passport as a set. Sort the IDP in India before departure — you cannot obtain one once you arrive — and know that your home licence is valid for stays of up to 12 months.

The side switch is the real adjustment

India drives on the left; Poland drives on the right. This is the single thing most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day at the wheel: pulling out of a fuel station, entering a roundabout that now flows clockwise, or the reflex glance in the wrong direction at a junction. Take your first hour on quiet roads rather than central Warsaw, and be deliberate at every turn until “right” stops feeling backwards. A strict alcohol limit

Poland’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.02, below India’s 0.03 and best treated as zero. There is no comfortable margin for a drink with dinner if you are driving afterwards. Enforcement is routine, including random breath tests, and the penalties run to fines and confiscation of the licence.

Speeds and the practicalities

Motorways allow up to 140 km/h, rural roads 90, towns 50.
