Can a Chinese Driver Use Their Licence in Poland? — IDP Required in Practice

For Chinese visitors, the one part of driving in Poland that deserves attention before anything else is paperwork — not the roads. Poland drives on the right, exactly as you do at home, so the physical act of driving will feel familiar. The friction is at the rental desk.

The licence verdict for Chinese drivers

A Chinese licence on its own is not reliably accepted in Poland. Because China has not signed the Geneva or Vienna conventions, the standard International Driving Permit issued in China is not always honoured, and practice varies by rental company. The realistic advice is to carry an IDP or a certified translation with your Chinese licence and passport, and to confirm with your rental firm in advance what they will accept — many will not hand over keys without that translated document. This is the single thing most likely to derail a trip, so settle it before you fly. You cannot fix it after you land.

No side switch — but plan the routes

Mainland China and Poland both drive on the right, so roundabouts, overtaking and junctions flow the way you are used to. That removes the most dangerous adjustment many tourists face. What remains is pace: Polish motorways allow up to 140 km/h, rural roads 90, and towns 50. The motorways are good and getting better, but Polish drivers overtake assertively and the main corridors carry heavy lorry traffic, so keep a generous gap.

The alcohol limit catches people out

Poland’s drink-drive limit is 0.02 BAC — low enough that it is best read as zero. Enforcement is normal and includes random roadside breath tests. Penalties run to fines and confiscation of the licence.
