Quick Answer

Australian licence holders can drive in Poland with an IDP recommended. Three things stand out — switching from left- to right-hand traffic, a 140 km/h motorway limit (the highest in Europe), and a near-zero 0.02 alcohol limit far below what you are used to at home.

Poland rewards a road trip — fast modern motorways, cheap fuel and easy distances between cities — but for an Australian driver it bundles three adjustments that pull in different directions, and the alcohol rule is the one that quietly ends trips.

First, the side. Australia drives on the left; Poland drives on the right. The danger is not the open road but the reflex moments: pulling out of a petrol station, taking a roundabout that now turns anticlockwise, the instinctive glance toward the wrong shoulder. Take your first hour somewhere quiet, well clear of Warsaw or Kraków traffic, and check yourself deliberately at every junction.

Then the speed. Poland’s motorways carry a 140 km/h limit — the fastest in the European Union, above the 110 you are used to at home. The roads are built for it, but so is the overtaking culture: expect fast lane-changes and trucks holding the inside lanes on single-carriageway routes between cities. Our Poland driving guide covers the road types where standards still vary.

The rule most likely to catch you out is alcohol. Poland enforces a 0.02 BAC limit — essentially zero, and a long way below Australia’s 0.05. There is no “one beer” allowance; a single drink can put you over, the penalties are severe, and checkpoints are routine. Treat driving and drinking as completely separate.

Speeds elsewhere are 50 km/h in town and 90 on rural roads, with mixed fixed-camera and patrol enforcement. A minor 10 km/h overshoot is cheap by European standards at around PLN 50 (about €12) — you can confirm a figure with the speeding fine calculator — but heavier speeding climbs fast, and rental fines reach you later, as our guide to who pays driving fines abroad explains. The car must carry a warning triangle, reflective vest and fire extinguisher; verify your paperwork with the driving permit checker. Emergencies are 112.
