Quick Answer

Yes — an Indian licence holder can drive in Peru with an International Driving Permit (IDP) recommended. The hard part is not the licence: it is switching from left- to right-hand traffic and then driving Andean roads where altitude, hairpins and missing guardrails do the real testing.

Most Indian travellers come to Peru for Cusco, the Sacred Valley and the long descent toward the coast — and a car opens up the bits the tour buses skip. The licence question is the easy part. The mountains are not.

Can you drive there on an Indian licence?

Yes. For a tourist stay your Indian licence is accepted, with an International Driving Permit recommended to go with it. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport as a set — rental desks in Lima and Cusco expect to see them, and so will police on a highway check. The IDP must be arranged in India before departure; it is not available in Peru. The Driving Permit Checker confirms exactly what you need.

First the side switch — then the altitude

India drives on the left; Peru drives on the right, so the opening hour carries the usual risk of roundabouts and junctions running the wrong way. But the adjustment that defines a Peru trip comes after that: the Andean roads. Routes climb above 4,000 metres, guardrails thin out, surfaces break up and the weather can shut a pass in minutes. Altitude itself slows your reactions and judgement before you notice. Acclimatise before you tackle a long mountain leg, keep fuel topped up between towns, and never drive these roads tired or after dark if you can avoid it.

Speeds, fines and the everyday numbers

Town limits are a low 35 km/h, rural roads 80, and the limited motorway stretches 100 km/h. A standard speeding penalty is around PEN 176 (roughly €42) — the Speeding Fine Calculator gives you a quick estimate. The drink-drive limit is 0.05, above India’s 0.03 but irrelevant on switchback roads where any alcohol is reckless. Fuel sits near $1.25 a litre, and the emergency number is 105.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for a tourist stay, with an International Driving Permit (IDP) recommended alongside it. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together; arrange the IDP in India before you travel, as you cannot get one in Peru.

Check if your licence is valid

Peru drives on the right. Coming from India's left-hand traffic, the first day is when it bites — and here the stakes are higher because much of the interesting driving is on narrow mountain roads.

It is the real challenge of the trip. Roads climb past 4,000 m, guardrails are limited and weather turns fast — altitude also dulls reactions. Build in rest, acclimatise before long mountain legs, and do not drive tired.
