Visitors drive on a home licence for about 90 days; carry the IDP, your Indian licence and the passport with its entry stamp. The real test is the side switch: India keeps left, Panama right.
Panama is a manageable Central American drive for an Indian visitor, with modern highways around the capital, but the orientation of the road is the opposite of home, and that is where the trip gets tested.
The verdict for Indian licence holders
Panama lets visitors drive on a foreign licence for a limited period: 90 days in Canada’s travel advice, three months in the UK’s. Canada also tells its travellers to carry an International Driving Permit. India issues the 1949-model IDP, and Panama is not a party to that convention, so treat the permit as a Spanish-readable translation that helps with police and hire desks rather than as a legal requirement. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport with its dated entry stamp, which shows you are still inside the permitted period. Arrange the IDP in India before you fly.
The biggest adjustment: switching to the right
India drives on the left; Panama drives on the right. The danger window is the first day: pulling out of a fuel station, joining a roundabout that now flows anticlockwise, or a reflex glance the wrong way at a junction. Take your first hour on quiet roads rather than in Panama City traffic.
Roads, alcohol and accidents
Canada describes road conditions and road safety as poor throughout the country, with dangerous driving and frequent, poorly lit night construction on the Pan-American Highway; UK advice adds potholes and unfinished repairs. Follow the posted limits and avoid night drives. On alcohol, UK advice is blunt: a driver found with any alcohol in their system may be fined, lose their licence and have the car impounded, so drink nothing. After an accident, call the police (104) and do not move the vehicle until an officer tells you to. Many local drivers have no insurance, so check your hire cover.
