Panama on an Indian Licence — IDP Recommended & a Full Side Switch

Panama is a straightforward Central American drive for an Indian visitor — modern highways around the capital, cheap fuel — but the orientation of the road is the opposite of home, and that’s where the trip actually gets tested.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Panama on your Indian licence with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. Panama operates in Spanish, so the IDP gives police and rental staff a translation of your English-and-regional-language licence. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together, and arrange the IDP in India before you fly — you cannot obtain an Indian-issued one in Panama.

The biggest adjustment: switching to the right

India drives on the left; Panama drives on the right. This is the single thing most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or a reflex glance the wrong direction at a junction. Take your first hour on quiet roads rather than Panama City traffic, and stay deliberate at every turn until right-hand traffic stops feeling backwards.

Speeds, alcohol and the city

Limits are low: 40 km/h in towns, 60 on rural roads, 100 on the main highways like the Corredor routes around the capital. Panama City itself is the real challenge — busy, fast-merging, and not always patient with a hesitant tourist, so build your confidence on the open road first. The alcohol limit is 0.05 BAC, slightly looser than India’s 0.03, but don’t let that change your habit while you’re adjusting to the wrong side of the road.
