For an American, Pakistan flips the one thing most US drivers never have to think about — which side of the road they are on — and that single change matters more than any speed table.

Can an American licence holder drive in Pakistan?

In licensing terms yes: your US licence is recognised for driving with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. Be realistic, though, about the wider picture — for American visitors the binding constraints are usually the visa and the security advisory rather than the paperwork. Settle those first, then treat the IDP as a simple add-on arranged at home before you travel.

The side switch is the real adjustment

The United States drives on the right; Pakistan drives on the left. This is the change most likely to catch an American out, and it bites hardest in the first hours — rejoining a road from a fuel station, taking a roundabout that now flows clockwise, or an instinctive glance the wrong way at a junction. If you can, practise in a quiet area before joining main roads; left-hand traffic takes a few hours to stop feeling backwards, and sitting on the right side of the car adds to the relearning.

Alcohol, speeds and traffic

The blood-alcohol limit is 0.0 — a complete ban, and alcohol is heavily restricted across the country, so there is no grey area: don’t drink and drive at all. Posted limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 rural, 120 on the motorway network, and the motorways are genuinely good and well-policed, while city and secondary roads are dense, mixed and unpredictable — drive defensively. Fuel is around $0.82/litre, and the police emergency number is 15, not the 911 you are used to.
