For an American, Oman pairs an easy bit with a strict bit. The easy part: no side switch — Oman drives on the right, the same as the US, so your instincts carry over. The strict part: an International Driving Permit is required, not merely recommended, and the alcohol limit is an absolute zero. The licence verdict — IDP is mandatory

Treat the IDP as required here: carry it with your US licence and passport. Arrange the permit in the States before you fly; alternatively a temporary licence is available locally from the Royal Oman Police (ROP). The “required” status is the key difference from a casual European trip where an IDP is only advisable — don’t skip it.

Same side, zero alcohol

Fast highways and desert distances
