Oman 2026 on a US Licence: Rental Cars Only, Zero Alcohol

For an American, Oman pairs an easy bit with a strict bit. The easy part: no side switch — Oman drives on the right, the same as the US, so your instincts carry over, and your US licence is accepted for a rental. The strict part: the alcohol limit is an absolute zero, and the licence only covers certain cars. Get those right and Oman is one of the Gulf’s most rewarding self-drive countries.

Your licence covers rentals, not private cars

The U.S. State Department’s country page says “short-term visitors with a U.S. driver’s license may drive rental vehicles, but not privately registered cars.” So no International Driving Permit is needed to pick up a hire car; what you cannot do is drive a car registered to a friend or host. Residents need an Omani licence. Carry your US licence and passport whenever you drive. The State Department also lists offences that can bring jail, fines or deportation: driving without a licence, running a red light, drink-driving, no seat belt, a hand-held phone, excessive speeding or overtaking, and even a dirty car.

Same side, zero alcohol

Because both countries keep right-hand traffic, the most dangerous overseas adjustment simply doesn’t apply. What does apply is the 0.00 alcohol limit — against the US 0.08 — backed by firm enforcement. The safe rule is no alcohol at all before driving.

Fast highways and desert distances

Speeds step up from a 60 km/h urban limit to 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, and Oman’s highways are long, fast and well-built — easy to cover big distances, but radar enforcement is common, so watch your speed. Off the main roads, wadi and mountain tracks demand a slower, more careful approach and often a 4x4. The emergency number is 9999, covering police, ambulance and fire. Carry water and offline maps for the remote stretches.
