Quick Answer

Yes — an Indian licence holder can drive in Oman, but an International Driving Permit is required, not merely advised: carry it with your Indian licence. Two things separate Oman from home: you switch from left- to right-hand traffic, and the alcohol limit is an absolute zero (0.0), with serious penalties — far stricter than India's 0.03.

Oman is one of the easier Gulf countries to drive in — modern motorways, clear signs in English and Arabic, and dramatic desert and coastal routes that genuinely reward having your own car. For an Indian visitor, two rules stand apart from everything at home: the permit is mandatory, and there is absolutely no room on alcohol.

Driving in Oman on an Indian licence

You can drive in Oman as a tourist, but unlike many countries an International Driving Permit is required, not just recommended — carry it together with your Indian licence and passport. The rental companies in Muscat will ask for it, and so may the Royal Oman Police, who also issue a temporary local licence if you need one. Your Indian licence is valid for roughly three months; beyond that you would be looking at a local conversion. Arrange the IDP in India before departure, and confirm the paperwork with our Driving Permit Checker. The full local rules are in the Oman driving guide.

Zero alcohol — and that means zero

This is the rule that catches Indian drivers most often. Oman runs a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit — an outright ban, not the 0.03 margin you have at home. There is no “one drink” allowance and enforcement is uncompromising; penalties can run to heavy fines and detention. If you are driving, do not touch alcohol at all, full stop.

The side switch and the open road

India drives on the left; Oman drives on the right, so the side switch is your other adjustment. The danger points are roundabouts — common in Muscat — and merging onto fast dual carriageways, where a reflex glance the wrong way is easy. Take your first session somewhere quiet and stay deliberate at every junction.

Once you settle in, the driving is good. Limits run to 60 km/h in towns, 100 on rural roads and 120 on motorways, and the highways are well-built, but radar enforcement is heavy and speed cameras are everywhere — the desert tempts you to push on, and the fines are steep. Watch for drifting sand, stray camels on remote roads and sudden wadis after rain. The emergency number is 112, fuel is cheap at about $0.58 a litre, and you can sense-check limits with our Speed Limit Map.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, on a short visit, but an IDP is required alongside your Indian licence — Oman does not treat it as optional for tourists, and rental firms in Muscat ask for it. A temporary licence is also available from the Royal Oman Police. Your home licence covers stays of up to about three months.

Check if your licence is valid

Zero. Oman enforces a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit with no tolerance, far stricter than India's 0.03. Penalties are severe and can include detention, so do not drink anything at all before driving.

Check your blood alcohol limit

Oman drives on the right, the opposite of India. The switch from left- to right-hand traffic is the main reflex adjustment for Indian drivers, particularly at roundabouts and when joining fast dual carriageways.
