Can an American Drive in North Macedonia? — IDP Recommended, No Side Switch

North Macedonia is one of the easier Balkan countries for an American to drive — you stay on the familiar right-hand side, and the road network around Skopje and down to Ohrid has improved sharply. The catches are smaller than the side switch most US tourists fear in this region: an alcohol limit you can’t relax on, and frequent police checkpoints where your paperwork needs to be in order.

Can an American drive on a US licence here?

Yes. Your US licence is accepted, and an International Driving Permit is recommended rather than strictly mandatory. Carry the IDP, your licence and your passport together — police checkpoints are common on rural roads, and an officer who can read your IDP is an officer who waves you through faster. Sort the IDP at home before you fly; you can’t obtain one once you arrive.

No side switch — but a stricter alcohol limit

The relief for American drivers: North Macedonia drives on the right, exactly as you do at home. There is no left-hand adjustment. What does change is alcohol. The limit is 0.05 BAC, lower than the 0.08 used in most US states, so the “one beer is fine” maths from home doesn’t apply.
