Nigeria on a US Licence 2026: Same Side, 0.05 BAC, NGN 5,000

If you hold a US licence and are heading to Nigeria, you will not have to relearn which side of the road to use. What you do have to learn is the pace, the checkpoints and a stricter alcohol line.

Licence and permit

Carry your US licence, your passport and an International Driving Permit obtained in the US before you fly, since it cannot be issued in Nigeria. Nigeria publishes nothing specific to American licences. Britain’s travel advice is the nearest official yardstick: a foreign licence for 3 months, a permit beyond that, and a Nigerian licence once you pass a year in the country. Same side, different pace

Nigeria drives on the right, exactly like the United States, which removes the most dangerous adjustment most American drivers face abroad. It does not make Nigeria an easy drive: city traffic is dense and assertive, and GOV.UK advises limiting travel after dark outside city centres and avoiding quiet, poorly lit roads.

Alcohol, limits and fines

WHO lists Nigeria’s blood-alcohol limit as 0.05, lower than the 0.08 used across most of the US, so do not drink if you are driving. Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on motorways. The Federal Road Safety Corps fines a speed limit violation at NGN 5,000 with 5 penalty points, phone use at NGN 4,000 and no seat belt at NGN 2,000. Fines are paid into a federal government account at a bank or through Remita. The same schedule fines a car with no working fire extinguisher (NGN 3,000) or no spare tyre (NGN 2,000), so check both before leaving the rental yard.

Checkpoints

Expect to be waved down at police and security checkpoints, particularly between cities; GOV.UK notes that both official and unofficial ones operate.
