Niger 2026: International Licence Required, Alcohol Zero

Niger is a vast, largely desert country in the Sahel, and for an American driver one piece of good news stands out: you keep driving on the right, exactly as at home. The licence needs an IDP beside it; beyond that, the things to plan for are a zero-tolerance alcohol rule and roads that demand real respect.

The license rule for American visitors

The U.S. State Department’s country page says: “All drivers must have either a valid Nigerien or international driver’s license.” For a visitor that means an International Driving Permit, issued in the US by AAA or AATA before you travel. It does not replace your US license, so carry the two together with your passport. The same page says local liability insurance is required for all vehicles, and that police on rural roads check license, registration, proof of insurance and destination.

No side switch — but zero alcohol tolerance

The US and Niger both drive on the right, so the most common source of overseas driving mistakes does not apply here. What does need attention is the alcohol limit: Niger enforces a 0.00 limit, against the 0.08 you are used to. There is no margin and no “one beer” allowance — if you are driving, do not drink at all.

The real challenge: desert roads and distance

Speeds are modest on paper — roughly 50 km/h in town and 80 km/h on the open road — but the binding constraint in Niger is not the speed limit, it is the environment. Outside Niamey and the few paved corridors, surfaces deteriorate quickly, sand and dust reduce visibility, and distances between fuel and help are long. Travel in daylight, carry plenty of water and a spare, and check current government security advice before planning any route, as parts of the country carry serious travel warnings. The emergency numbers are police 17, ambulance 15 and fire 18.
