New Zealand on a Swedish Licence — The Side Switch & a Looser Alcohol Limit

Two things will feel unfamiliar to a Swedish driver in New Zealand, and one is purely cultural. Start with the side: you cross from the right to left-hand traffic, sitting on the right of the car with roundabouts turning clockwise. The reflexes take a day to settle, and the danger window is your first hour — pulling out of a forecourt, the first roundabout, the automatic glance the wrong way. Begin somewhere quiet rather than a busy arterial.

Then the roads. Sweden’s network is wide, smooth and forgiving; New Zealand’s open highways are narrow, twisting and edged with gravel, climbing and dropping through hills with few overtaking chances. Add the famous single-lane bridges — hundreds of them, especially on the South Island — and you have a road type that demands patience. At each bridge a sign shows two arrows: a small red arrow means give way to oncoming traffic, a larger black arrow means you go first. Slow right down, read it, and only commit when the bridge is clear.

The cultural shift is alcohol. Sweden runs one of Europe’s strictest limits at 0.02; New Zealand’s is 0.05 — markedly looser. Don’t take that as licence to relax: enforcement is heavy, the under-20 limit is zero, and a calm holiday isn’t worth the risk, so keep it to none before driving.
