New Zealand on a Polish Licence — IDP Required, Side Switch & a 100 km/h Cap

New Zealand is a long way from Poland in every sense, and the driving makes that clear from the first roundabout: a different side of the road, and a speed ceiling far below Polish motorways. The licence has one extra step to sort too.

The verdict for Polish licence holders

You can drive in New Zealand on your Polish licence for up to 12 months, but mind the requirement that trips people up: because the Polish licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit is required to carry with it. Get the IDP at home before you fly — it is the translation the hire desk and police expect. Keep the IDP, your licence and passport together.

The side switch is the real test

Poland drives on the right; New Zealand drives on the left. This is the main hazard, and the first day is when it bites — leaving a car park, taking a roundabout that now runs the opposite way, or the reflex glance the wrong way at a junction. Do your first drive somewhere quiet, and stay consciously deliberate until left-hand traffic feels natural.

A 100 km/h ceiling, and roads slower than they look

The biggest mental shift after Poland is the speed: New Zealand caps the open road and motorways at 100 km/h, well below the 140 you can do on a Polish motorway, with towns at 50. But the roads matter more than the number — they are narrow, winding and longer than the map suggests, with one-lane bridges where a white arrow gives priority and a red arrow means give way. A 10 km/h-over fine is around NZD 80 (about €45) plus 10 demerit points, enforced by fixed cameras and mobile patrols. The drink-drive limit is 0.05.

Practical notes: petrol is roughly $1.72/litre, and the emergency number is 111 — save it before you set off.
