Quick Answer

Canadian visitors switch from right- to left-hand traffic in New Zealand and meet narrow, winding roads with single-lane bridges. The drink-drive limit also drops from 0.08 to 0.05. An English Canadian licence needs no IDP for stays up to 12 months.

For a Canadian, the headline change in New Zealand is the one you’ll feel in your hands: you cross from right- to left-hand traffic. The wheel is on the right, the gearstick on your left, and roundabouts run clockwise. None of it is difficult, but the reflexes are wired the other way, so the risky stretch is your first hour — pulling out of a forecourt, joining a roundabout, or the automatic glance left when you should look right. Begin on quiet roads, not on a motorway out of the airport.

The roads then ask something Canadian highways rarely do. Outside the cities New Zealand runs on narrow, winding two-lanes with blind corners, gravel edges and single-lane bridges dotted across the South Island. Each bridge carries a sign with two arrows: a small red arrow means give way to oncoming traffic, a larger black arrow means you go first. Slow right down and read it — locals expect you to know the rule and won’t hang back if you’ve got priority.

The other adjustment is alcohol. New Zealand’s limit is 0.05, below the 0.08 criminal threshold in most Canadian provinces, and police breath-test routinely. Treat it as zero before driving. If your licence is in English — true everywhere except a French Quebec licence — you need no IDP for stays up to 12 months, which makes the documents the easiest part; confirm with our Driving Permit Checker if unsure.

Speeds are gentle by Canadian standards: 100 km/h on the open road, 50 in towns, with terrain that keeps you well under those numbers anyway. Fixed cameras and mobile patrols are common, and 10 km/h over costs around NZD 80 plus demerit points; our Speeding Fine Calculator will estimate it. Petrol is roughly $1.72/litre and the emergency number is 111. For the full rules before you set off, read our New Zealand driving guide.
