Quick Answer

Brazilian visitors switch from right- to left-hand traffic in New Zealand and should carry an IDP to translate the Portuguese licence. The bigger surprise is the road type — narrow, winding two-lanes and single-lane bridges where the arrow tells you who gives way.

New Zealand is built for a road trip, but for a Brazilian driver two things flip from what feels normal. The first is the side: you cross from the right to left-hand traffic, which means your whole frame of reference changes. Roundabouts turn clockwise, you sit on the right of the car, and the instinct to drift right after a turn has to be unlearned. The danger window is your first hour — pulling out of a car park, taking an unfamiliar junction, glancing the wrong way. Start somewhere quiet, not on a busy Auckland arterial.

The second surprise is the roads themselves. Away from the few motorways, New Zealand runs on narrow, twisting two-lane highways with blind bends, gravel shoulders and single-lane bridges that are everywhere on the South Island. At those bridges a sign shows two arrows: the smaller red arrow means you give way to oncoming traffic, the larger black arrow means you have priority. Slow right down, read the arrow, and never assume — locals know the etiquette and expect you to as well.

On paperwork, your Brazilian licence is valid for up to 12 months, but because it’s in Portuguese you should carry an International Driving Permit or an official English translation. Sort it before you fly; check exactly what applies with our Driving Permit Checker.

The drink-drive limit is 0.05 for drivers over 20 — technically looser than Brazil’s near-total ban, but police enforce it hard and the under-20 limit is zero. Speeds are modest: 100 km/h on the open road, 50 in towns, and steep terrain means you’ll rarely hold the limit anyway. Cameras and mobile patrols are common, and 10 km/h over runs about NZD 80 plus demerit points — our Speeding Fine Calculator gives a quick estimate. Petrol is around $1.72/litre and the emergency number is 111. For the complete rules, see our New Zealand driving guide.

Yes, for up to 12 months. Because a Brazilian licence is in Portuguese, carry an International Driving Permit or an official English translation alongside it.

The left. Coming from Brazil you switch sides, so junctions, roundabouts and overtaking all need conscious attention for the first day.

0.05 BAC for drivers over 20, and zero for under-20s. That is looser than Brazil's effective zero-tolerance, but enforcement is heavy, so keep it to none.
