Can an Indian Drive in New Caledonia? — IDP Recommended & the Side Switch

New Caledonia is a French territory in the South Pacific, built around the long main island of Grande Terre and the capital, Noumea. For an Indian visitor it follows French rules, which brings one familiar adjustment — the side of the road — alongside the longest and most drivable road network of any island group in this part of the Pacific.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in New Caledonia on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. As French territory your licence is accepted for visitors, but rental desks generally prefer the IDP as a certified translation of a non-Latin licence. The biggest adjustment: driving on the right

India drives on the left; New Caledonia, like mainland France, drives on the right. This is the main thing to get right, and the risk is concentrated in your first day — pulling out of a junction, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction by reflex. Outside Noumea the traffic is light, so you can settle into the new orientation on quiet roads before tackling anything busier.

What driving here is actually like

Grande Terre is unusually long for a Pacific island, and a main route runs much of its length, linking Noumea with the northern towns and the east coast — a genuine road trip rather than a single loop. The smaller islands, including the Loyalty Islands, have shorter and simpler networks. Surfaces on the main routes are reasonable, but expect narrower, rougher roads inland and on the smaller islands, sudden tropical downpours, and stretches with little traffic or signage. Drive to the conditions rather than any posted figure, fuel up before long legs, and watch for wildlife and pedestrians near villages.

Practical notes

Fuel and services concentrate around Noumea and the larger towns, so plan ahead before heading into the interior or to the islands. The general emergency number is 112. With light traffic and long distances, steady pacing and patience matter more here than speed.
