Can an Italian Drive in the Netherlands? — No IDP Needed, 100 km/h Motorway Cap

Italian drivers tend to find the Netherlands almost suspiciously orderly after the improvisation of home. The licence is no obstacle at all — the things worth knowing are the lower speeds and the cyclists.

The verdict for Italian licence holders

Your Italian licence is an EU licence, so it is valid in the Netherlands with no International Driving Permit required. Carry your licence and passport and you can hire and drive straight away. There is no need to convert anything or count down a validity window for a holiday-length stay.

Slower than home, and cameras that mean it

The single number to internalise is the motorway limit: 100 km/h, against Italy’s 130. It feels slow, but Dutch enforcement is consistent — fixed and mobile cameras are widespread and the system is calibrated and unforgiving. Town limits are 50 km/h and rural roads 80. A speeding fine typically lands at EUR 39-66 depending on the road type, so it is not worth pushing the cruise control above the line for the sake of a few minutes.

No side switch — but the cyclists are the real lesson

Both countries drive on the right, so there is nothing to relearn about the side of the road. What is unlike Italy is the cycling culture. Bikes have dedicated lanes, their own traffic lights and, in many situations, outright priority — including when you are turning across a cycle path. The Dutch network is excellent and very well marked, which makes it an easy drive, but you must build the habit of checking for cyclists before every turn.

Practical notes: fuel is expensive at roughly $2.15/litre, and the emergency number is 112, identical to Italy’s.
