Quick Answer

Yes — an Indian licence holder can drive in Namibia, with an IDP recommended if your licence isn't fully in English. The reassuring part: Namibia drives on the left, like India, so no side switch. The real test is hundreds of kilometres of loose gravel roads between towns.

Namibia is one of the world’s great self-drive destinations — empty roads, vast desert and wildlife you reach under your own steam. For an Indian driver the licence and the side of the road both work in your favour; the thing that catches people out is the surface beneath the tyres.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in Namibia?

Yes. Your Indian licence is valid for visitors for up to 12 months provided it’s in English and carries a photograph; if not, carry an International Driving Permit with it. Keep your licence and passport accessible, and arrange the IDP at home if you need one — it isn’t issued locally. The Driving Permit Checker confirms exactly what your licence requires.

No side switch — the gravel is the real adjustment

Namibia drives on the left, the same as India, so junctions and roundabouts behave the way you expect. The genuine challenge is the gravel roads. Most of the country’s iconic routes — to Sossusvlei, through the Namib, up to Etosha — are unpaved, and loose gravel is where the majority of tourist crashes happen. Keep speeds modest (well below the tarmac limit), avoid sudden steering or braking, and treat a skid by easing off rather than fighting the wheel. Many visitors hire a 4x4 for exactly this reason.

Distances, fuel and the basics

Towns of any size are far apart, so fuel up at every opportunity and carry water — a breakdown between settlements can mean a long wait. Limits run 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and up to 100 km/h on the main tarmac, with a 0.05 alcohol limit. Petrol is around $1.08 a litre and the emergency number is 112, though response in remote areas is slow. Watch for animals on the road at dawn and dusk, and avoid night driving entirely where you can.

Yes. An Indian licence is valid for visitors of up to 12 months if it's in English with a photo; otherwise carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. Keep your licence and passport with you at all times.

Check if your licence is valid

Namibia drives on the left — the same as India — so there's no side switch to relearn. The genuine challenge is the long gravel roads, where most tourist accidents happen.

Namibia uses a 0.05 BAC limit, slightly above India's 0.03. On remote roads far from help, the safe approach is not to drink before driving at all.
