Quick Answer

Yes — a British licence holder can drive in Myanmar, with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside your UK licence and passport. The real adjustment isn't the paperwork: Myanmar drives on the right, the opposite of home, yet most cars on the road are still right-hand-drive imports, so your seating and overtaking sightlines feel wrong in both directions at once.

If you hold a British licence and you’re heading to Myanmar, the licence question has a short answer and a long caveat. The short answer: yes, you can drive. The caveat is everything that happens once you’re actually behind the wheel.

The verdict for British licence holders

You can drive in Myanmar on your British licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. It isn’t always demanded, but rental firms and roadside police are far happier seeing the IDP, your UK licence and your passport together. Sort the IDP before you fly — you can’t obtain one once you’ve arrived. If you’re confirming exactly what you need, run your trip through the Driving Permit Checker.

The one thing that actually catches British drivers

Britain drives on the left; Myanmar drives on the right — so far, an ordinary side-switch. What makes Myanmar genuinely unusual is that the cars are mostly still right-hand drive, imported second-hand. You end up sitting on the kerb side of a right-driving country, which means your view down the road for overtaking is the worst of both worlds. Don’t overtake on trust. On single-carriageway roads, have a passenger confirm the lane is clear, and give yourself far more room than instinct suggests.

Speeds, drink and the roads themselves

The limits are 48 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the expressway between Yangon, Naypyidaw and Mandalay — the one genuinely fast road in the country, and one with a poor safety record, so the posted number is not an invitation. The drink-drive limit is 0.05, lower than home; in practice, don’t drink at all before driving. Fuel runs around $0.72 a litre. Away from that expressway, surfaces deteriorate quickly, lighting is rare, and you’ll share the road with motorbikes, livestock and unlit carts after dark.

Before you set off

Carry your IDP, UK licence and passport together, and keep digital copies. The emergency number is 112, though response in rural areas is slow — drive defensively rather than relying on rescue. Read the country specifics on our Myanmar driving guide, and if you’re touring more of the region, the Driving Permit Checker confirms paperwork country by country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A British licence is accepted for short visits and an IDP is recommended to carry alongside it — rental desks and police prefer to see one. Carry your UK licence, the IDP and your passport together.

Check if your licence is valid

Myanmar drives on the right, the opposite of the UK. Unusually, most vehicles are still right-hand drive, so overtaking from the wrong-side seat needs real caution — let a passenger check the road for you.

The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05, below the 0.08 you may be used to in England and Wales. Treat driving as a no-alcohol activity; enforcement and penalties are unpredictable for foreigners.
