US Drivers in Morocco 2026: One-Year Licence, 0.02 Limit
United States
Morocco
A US licence is valid in Morocco for up to one year, the State Department says, so no IDP is needed. Same side of the road as home; the catch is a 0.02 alcohol limit.
If you cannot settle a fine at the roadside, the State Department says the officer may keep your licence until you pay, which can strand a road trip. Keep some dirhams for it.
The reflexes that work in the US mostly carry over to Morocco — same right-hand side of the road, same instinct at junctions — so the thing that catches American drivers isn’t the steering wheel. It’s the breathalyser. Morocco enforces a 0.02 BAC limit, roughly a quarter of the 0.08 standard across the US. The single beer with dinner that sits comfortably under the limit at home will put you over it here. If you are driving, the only safe number is zero, and police checks on the approaches to cities are routine.
Your licence
Paperwork is the easy part. The U.S. State Department’s country page says “foreign driver’s licenses are valid for use in Morocco for up to one year,” so your US licence covers a holiday on its own; after a year, residents have to pass the Moroccan driving test. An IDP from AAA or AATA is optional and does no harm at the rental desk. UK government advice, written for British licence holders, tells them to carry a 1968 permit. Our Driving Permit Checker covers the other countries on your route.
On the road
The toll autoroutes between the big cities are excellent and run to 120 km/h, faster than the US interstate norm. The contrast comes off them: rural surfaces are variable, donkeys, cyclists and pedestrians share the carriageway, and the old-town medinas cannot be driven into — park outside the walls and walk. Drive to what you can see, especially after dark when unlit carts appear. A speeding ticket for 20+ km/h over typically lands at MAD 300-700 (about EUR 28-65, up to EUR 65-130 for serious overspeeds), often paid on the spot; if you cannot pay, the officer may keep your licence until you do. Our Speeding Fine Calculator is worth a look before you go.
Fuel runs around $1.38/litre, well under US-converted prices in most states, the police number is 190 (150 for ambulance and fire, 177 for the Royal Gendarmerie outside towns), and rural coverage is patchy — download offline maps first. The complete rulebook is on the Morocco driving guide.
