Morocco on a Swedish Licence — IDP Recommended, Same 0.02 Alcohol Rule

For Swedish travellers, Morocco is a winter-sun antidote to the long dark months at home, and a hire car is the only sensible way to link the coast, the Atlas passes and the desert edge. The licence rules are refreshingly light.

The verdict for Swedish licence holders

Your Swedish licence is accepted for tourist stays of up to 12 months, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to go with it. The law does not always insist on the IDP, but Moroccan police and rental companies expect one, and it provides a clean translation of a licence otherwise printed only in Swedish. Arrange it before you leave home — it cannot be issued in Morocco — and keep it with your licence and passport.

The alcohol rule will feel familiar — the roads will not

One thing Swedish drivers can relax about: Morocco’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.02, the same near-zero standard you live with at home. There is no adjustment to make there. The genuine change is the road itself. Expect donkeys and pedestrians on the carriageway, surfaces that drop from smooth toll motorway to broken free-road without warning, and historic medinas that cars simply cannot enter — leave the car at a guarded lot and walk. After Sweden’s calm, well-graded roads this takes a day to get used to.

Right-hand traffic, and where the limits sit

You already drive on the right, so there is no side switch — a real advantage over visitors from left-driving countries. Posted limits are 60 km/h urban, 100 rural and 120 on the toll motorways, which are well surfaced and worth using for long stretches. A speeding fine of around 10 km/h over is typically MAD 300-700 (about €28-65), frequently paid on the spot, so keep cash handy.
