Morocco on a South Korean Licence — No Side Switch, 0.02 Limit

Morocco is a superb self-drive country, and for a South Korean visitor the basics line up well — the side of the road is the same, and the licence is straightforward. The care goes into alcohol rules and the kind of streets a car cannot handle.

The verdict for South Korean licence holders

You can drive in Morocco on your South Korean licence, valid for tourists for up to one year, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. The IDP is not always demanded but rental desks and roadside police prefer to see one, and it translates your entitlement cleanly. Arrange it in Korea before you travel and keep it with your licence and passport.

No side switch — but a near-zero alcohol limit

Both South Korea and Morocco drive on the right, so there is no left-to-right adjustment to make — one fewer thing to think about on day one. Where you do need to recalibrate is alcohol: Morocco’s limit is 0.02 BAC, tighter than Korea’s 0.03 and effectively zero. Checkpoints are routine, especially around cities and on holiday routes, so keep driving and drinking entirely separate. A typical fixed penalty for a minor offence runs MAD 300–700 (≈ €28–65), often settled on the spot.

Roads, medinas and mountains

Posted limits are 60 km/h in towns, 100 rural, 120 on motorways, and the toll motorways between major cities are excellent. The challenge is everything else: rural roads share space with donkeys, pedestrians and slow trucks, mountain routes in the Atlas are narrow and exposed, and the old-town medinas of Fes and Marrakech are effectively impassable by car — park outside and walk in. Drive to the conditions. Fuel is around $1.38/litre and the emergency number is 19 for police.
