Morocco on an Italian Licence — No IDP, but Mind the 0.02 Limit & Rough Roads

Italians have it easier than most visitors to Morocco: the country drives on the right, just like home, so there is no side switch to relearn, and an International Driving Permit is recommended rather than required. The adjustments that matter are smaller and more specific.

The first is alcohol. Morocco’s limit is 0.02 BAC, below the Italian 0.05. The cautious half-glass you might allow yourself at home does not translate; if you are driving, don’t drink at all. Police checks are routine on the city approaches, and the penalties run to on-the-spot fines and, at officers’ discretion, licence confiscation.

The second is the road. Morocco’s toll autoroutes — Casablanca to Marrakech, Tangier down the coast — are smooth and fast at 120 km/h, slightly below the 130 you get on the Italian autostrada. The contrast comes when you leave them. Rural surfaces are uneven, you will share the carriageway with donkeys, cyclists and pedestrians, and the old-town medinas are simply impassable by car, so park outside the walls and continue on foot. Drive to what you can see, particularly after dark when unlit carts appear. ZTL fines may be a familiar headache at home, but here the equivalent trap is a speeding ticket for 20 km/h over, typically MAD 300-700 (about EUR 28-65) and often paid on the spot.

Because Italy is an EU member, your licence is fully recognised for stays up to 12 months and no IDP is legally demanded — though carrying one still smooths a roadside stop where the officer cannot read Latin-script details quickly.
