Quick Answer

Irish drivers face two real changes in Morocco — switching from the left to right-hand traffic, and a 0.02 alcohol limit well below Ireland's 0.05. Rural roads are rougher than the limits suggest, with donkeys and pedestrians sharing the tarmac. An IDP is recommended.

For an Irish driver, the single biggest adjustment in Morocco has nothing to do with paperwork: Ireland drives on the left, Morocco drives on the right. That reversal is what catches people out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a petrol forecourt, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction out of reflex. Take the first hour on quiet roads outside the city, keep deliberate at every turn, and let the new instinct settle before you tackle Marrakech or Casablanca traffic.

The second adjustment is the drink-drive limit. Morocco sits at 0.02 BAC, below the 0.05 you are used to at home. The practical answer is the same as everywhere sensible: don’t drink if you’re driving. Roadside checks are common near cities, and penalties stretch to on-the-spot fines and licence confiscation.

Then there is the road itself. The toll autoroutes between the big cities are excellent and run to 120 km/h, but step off them and you meet variable rural surfaces, donkeys and cyclists sharing the carriageway, and pedestrians who step out without warning. The old medinas are impassable by car — park outside the walls and walk. Drive to what the road shows you rather than the posted number, and be especially wary after dark. A typical speeding fine for 20 km/h over is MAD 300-700 (about EUR 28-65), frequently paid on the spot.

On documents, your Irish licence covers stays up to 12 months and an International Driving Permit is recommended — not always demanded by law, but it speeds up police stops and some rental desks expect it. Arrange it before you leave Ireland. You can verify exactly what applies with our Driving Permit Checker and read the complete rules on the Morocco driving guide.

Fuel is roughly $1.38/litre, the police emergency number is 19 (15 for ambulance and fire), and rural signal is unreliable, so save offline maps before you set out. If you do pick up a ticket, our Speeding Fine Calculator helps you sanity-check the amount.
