Yes. The U.S. State Department says foreign licences are valid in Morocco for up to a year, so an Indian licence works for a holiday; carry your RTO permit as a translation and confirm with the hire firm first. Traffic keeps right and the alcohol limit is 0.2 g/l.
Can you drive in Morocco with an Indian licence? For a holiday, yes. The U.S. State Department’s Morocco page states that foreign driver’s licences are valid for up to one year, and it does not limit that to American cards. Bring the licence, your passport and the International Driving Permit from your RTO. Then ask the rental company, in writing, which of those it wants to see. The reason for that last step is a disagreement between two official sources, explained below.
Two governments, two answers on the permit
The U.S. view is the generous one: a foreign licence on its own is valid for a year. The UK government’s advice to British drivers is stricter. It asks for a 1968-format IDP and says Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 version. An Indian RTO can only issue the 1949 permit, because India signed that convention and not the later one.
What does that mean for you? There is no 1968 permit available to an Indian licence holder, so you cannot follow the British instruction even if you wanted to. The licence itself, plus the RTO permit as a translation, is the best you can carry. The hire company’s written confirmation is your protection at the counter and at a police check. Morocco’s road-safety agency, NARSA, adds one condition of its own: the licence must cover the category of vehicle you are driving.
Right-hand roads after a lifetime on the left
India keeps left. Morocco keeps right. The steering wheel is on the left, and the gear lever moves to your right hand. Roundabouts run anticlockwise. Most wrong-side moments come in the first hours, when you leave a petrol station or a car park and the road is empty. Collect the car away from the centre of Marrakech or Casablanca and spend the first hour on quiet roads before tackling city traffic.

The town figures are the big change. Moroccan streets drop to 40 or even 20 km/h, so watch for the signs as you enter each place.
What a ticket costs
NARSA publishes the speeding bands:
- under 20 km/h over: MAD 300
- 20-29 km/h over: MAD 500 and 2 points
- 30-49 km/h over: MAD 700 and 4 points
- 50 km/h or more over: a criminal offence, not a ticket
The 0.2 rule on alcohol
Morocco’s limit is 0.2 g/l, below India’s 30 mg per 100 ml. UK travel advice warns that any alcohol found in a test can mean a fine and possibly prison. In practice, a glass of wine with a tagine dinner rules out the drive back to the riad. Plan the evening around a taxi.
Kit in the boot
NARSA’s checklist requires a yellow reflective vest, a warning triangle and spare bulbs in every car. Indian drivers often have a first-aid box and extinguisher in their own vehicles; in Morocco those two are only recommended, while the vest and spare bulbs are compulsory. Look for all three required items before you leave the rental lot.
Medinas, mountains and the north
You cannot drive into the old medinas of Fez, Marrakech or other cities; the alleys are too narrow. Use a guarded car park at the edge and walk. Country roads range from smooth toll motorways to rough single tracks shared with carts, donkeys and people walking to market. If your route heads north towards Tetouan and the Rif, or over the Atlas passes, allow far more time than the distance suggests and finish mountain stretches before dark.
