Morocco on an Austrian Licence — IDP Recommended, a 0.02 Limit & Shared Roads

For an Austrian driver, Morocco offers everything the Alps do not — desert, Atlantic coast and Atlas passes — and the legal side of getting behind the wheel is refreshingly simple. The adjustments are about road culture, not paperwork.

Can an Austrian licence holder drive in Morocco?

Yes. Your Austrian licence is valid for tourist stays of up to one year, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. Carry it alongside your licence and passport; rental desks and roadside police both prefer to see one. Since Morocco drives on the right, just as Austria does, there is no side switch to relearn — one fewer thing to think about on day one. Sort the IDP at home before you travel.

A stricter line on alcohol

Where Austria sets its limit at 0.05, Morocco runs a tighter 0.02 BAC. With alcohol already restricted in much of the country, the cleanest approach is simply not to drink before driving. Enforcement is real, and penalties are not worth the risk.

The roads change once you leave the motorway

Morocco’s toll motorways linking the big cities are good and fast. Step off them and the picture changes: rural roads are shared with donkeys, carts, cyclists and pedestrians, surfaces vary, and mountain routes can be narrow with long drops and no barrier. The old-city medinas are impassable by car — leave the vehicle outside and walk. After dark, expect unlit vehicles. The rule that keeps you safe is to drive to your sight lines, not to the sign.

Speeds, fines and essentials

Limits are 60 km/h in towns, 100 rural and 120 on the motorway. A typical speeding fine is MAD 300-700 (≈ €28-65), frequently paid on the spot, so keep cash handy. Fuel sits near $1.38 a litre, and the emergency numbers are 19 for police and 15 for an ambulance.
