Can an American Drive in Mongolia? — IDP Advised, and a Strict 0.02 Alcohol Limit

Most Americans who drive in Mongolia are not pottering around the capital — they are heading for the steppe, the Gobi, or the reindeer country in the north. That ambition is exactly why the paperwork is the least of your worries and the road surface is the most.

The verdict for an American licence holder

You can drive in Mongolia on your US licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to go with it. Rental companies in Ulan Bator and any police checkpoint will be happier seeing the IDP’s translation of your American licence than puzzling over the English-only document alone. Get the IDP before you fly — you cannot arrange one once you arrive. Keep IDP, licence and passport in the same pocket.

Helpfully, Mongolia drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there is no side switch to unlearn.

The figure that catches people: a 0.02 alcohol limit

Mongolia’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.02 — for practical purposes, zero, and a fraction of the 0.08 most American states use. This is the one hard number worth burning into memory before a night out: there is no “one beer is fine” cushion here. If you are driving, do not drink at all.

Where the trip actually gets hard: the road ends

The thing no licence prepares you for is that Mongolia has very little paved road. Around Ulan Bator the town limit is 40 km/h and rural roads run to 80 km/h, but those numbers describe a tiny slice of the country. Drive a few hours in any direction and tarmac gives way to braided gravel tracks across open land with no markings, no barriers and no signage. People navigate by GPS and landmarks, carry spare fuel and water, and rarely travel alone. Fuel is cheap — around $0.95 a litre — but stations thin out fast, so fill whenever you can. The emergency number is 112.
