Quick Answer

Yes — an American licence holder can drive in Moldova, with an IDP recommended to carry alongside it. There's no side switch (both drive on the right), but a 0.03 alcohol limit far stricter than the US and poor rural road conditions are the real things to watch.

Can an American licence holder drive in Moldova? Yes — your US licence is accepted for a visit, and you should carry an International Driving Permit with it. The IDP is recommended rather than always demanded, but Moldovan police and rental firms much prefer to see it alongside your licence and passport. For an American, the good news is what you don’t have to relearn: Moldova drives on the right, the same as home, so there’s no side switch to unsettle your first day.

The adjustments are elsewhere, and the first is alcohol. Moldova’s limit is 0.03 — far below the US 0.08, and tight enough that there is no comfortable “one drink” margin. Effectively, if you’re driving, you don’t drink. Penalties are real and enforcement is active, so don’t carry American habits about a beer with dinner across the Atlantic.

The second is the roads themselves. Inside Chișinău and on the main corridors things are manageable, but outside the cities road conditions are poor and signage is limited — surfaces break up, lane markings vanish, and you’ll meet unlit farm vehicles, horse-drawn carts and livestock. The result is that an hour’s worth of distance can take far longer, and the experience earns Moldova its “challenging” rating. Plan generous travel times, avoid rural night driving where you can, and let the condition of the road set your speed. On paper, limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 on rural roads and 110 km/h on the few motorway-grade stretches. Speeding about 10 km/h over typically costs MDL 600-900 (≈€30-45). Note also that winter tyres are required in the cold months, so confirm a winter rental is properly equipped.

Fuel is around US$1.15 a litre, and the emergency number is 112, not the 911 you’re used to. Carry your US licence, IDP and passport together.

Check if your licence is valid

It is 0.03 — far stricter than the US 0.08, leaving effectively no margin. Treat it as zero before driving; penalties are heavy.

Check your blood alcohol limit

Outside the cities, yes. Road conditions are poor and signage is limited, so a journey takes longer than the distance suggests. About 10 km/h over the limit costs MDL 600-900 (roughly EUR 30-45).
