Can an Indian Drive in Moldova? — Yes, but Switch Sides and Watch the Rural Roads

Moldova is one of Europe’s least-visited countries, which is part of its appeal — quiet wine roads, low traffic and a slow pace. For an Indian driver the paperwork is easy enough; the two adjustments worth preparing for are the side of the road and the state of the surfaces once you leave the capital.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in Moldova?

Yes. Your Indian licence is accepted for tourist visits, and you should carry an International Driving Permit with it — rental desks and police prefer the translation. The side switch

India drives on the left; Moldova drives on the right. This is the change most likely to catch you out, and the first day is when it bites — pulling out of a fuel stop, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or a reflex glance the wrong direction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads, not in Chișinău traffic, and stay deliberate at every junction.

Rough rural roads and thin signage

Outside the capital, road conditions deteriorate and signage is limited — this is the real day-to-day challenge. Potholes, unmarked lanes and slow farm traffic are common, and a “main road” can be in poor repair. Drive to what’s in front of you rather than the sign, keep longer legs to daylight, and don’t assume a route will be quick just because the distance is short.

Winter tyres, speeds and fines

Moldova requires winter tyres in the cold months, so confirm a hire car is fitted before a winter trip. Limits run 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h rural and 110 km/h on the best roads, with a strict 0.03 alcohol limit. Going about 10 km/h over typically costs around MDL 600–900 (≈ €30–45). Fuel is roughly $1.15 a litre and the emergency number is 112.
