Quick Answer

Americans can drive in Mexico on a US licence with an IDP recommended, but the catch most miss is insurance — US auto policies generally don't cover you south of the border, so you need Mexican liability cover. On the road, watch for topes (unmarked speed bumps) on the free roads.

What Tourists Miss

Americans driving in Mexico face EUR 90-180 fines for 20+ km/h over the limit. IDP is strongly recommended; police stops escalate without one, and US auto insurance does not cross the border.

For Americans, Mexico is the easiest international self-drive there is — same side of the road, a short hop from the border, fuel cheaper than home. The trap is assuming everything else carries over too. Two things don’t: your insurance, and the road surface.

The catch Americans miss: insurance

Your US auto policy almost certainly stops at the border. Mexico requires liability cover from a Mexican-authorised insurer, and driving without it after a crash can mean your car is impounded and you are held until claims are settled. Buy a short-term Mexican policy online before you cross, or at a border booth — it is cheap and non-negotiable. This matters far more than the licence question, which is straightforward.

The verdict on paperwork

You can drive on your US licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended as the translation rental desks and police prefer to see. Carry the IDP, your US licence and passport together; the licence covers stays of up to 6 months. Sort the IDP before you travel. The Driving Permit Checker confirms what your trip needs.

Topes and the speed cap

Driving is on the right, the same as home, so there’s no side switch — but the topes will surprise you. These unmarked speed bumps guard the entrance to every village on the free (libre) roads, and hitting one fast can cost a tyre or the sump. Slow hard at any cluster of houses or roadside stalls. Motorways cap at 110 km/h, marginally faster than the 65 mph you may be used to, with rural roads at 80 and towns a strict 40 km/h. A 10 km/h overspeed runs MXN 870-1,700 (≈ EUR 45-90) by state — estimate yours with the Speeding Fine Calculator.

The alcohol limit is 0.08 BAC, the same as most US states, but night alcoholimetro roadblocks are routine, so keep it at zero. Petrol is around $1.12/litre, and 911 reaches emergency services nationwide. Full rules are on our Mexico driving guide.

Usually not. Most US policies stop at the border, and Mexico requires liability cover from a Mexican-authorised insurer. Buy a short-term policy online before you cross or at the border — driving uninsured after an accident can mean detention.
