Switzerland sets a high bar for road quality and discipline, so the surprise of driving in Mexico is rarely the rules — they are straightforward — and almost always the road itself. Here is the honest picture for a Swiss driver.

Can a Swiss licence holder drive in Mexico?

Yes. Your Swiss licence is valid for tourist stays of up to six months, and since Mexico drives on the right just as Switzerland does, there is no side switch to relearn. The one sensible step is to carry an International Driving Permit. Mexican rental desks ask for it routinely, and turning up without one can hold up your booking, even though police seldom check. Get the IDP at home before you fly.

From Alpine perfection to Mexican reality

Swiss roads are precise; Mexican ones are not. The country has two tiers. The cuota toll motorways are well surfaced and patrolled — pay the fee and use them for long stretches.
