Quick Answer

Yes — a Swedish licence holder can drive in Mexico for stays of up to six months, with an International Driving Permit recommended for the rental desk. The jolt for a Swedish driver is the gap in standards: rough free roads, unmarked topes (speed bumps), and an alcohol limit of 0.08 against the near-zero 0.02 you are used to.

Sweden has some of the calmest, best-kept roads in Europe, so Mexico is a step change — not in the licence rules, which are simple, but in what the road throws at you. Here is what a Swedish driver should know before collecting the keys.

The verdict for Swedish licence holders

You can drive in Mexico on your Swedish licence for tourist stays of up to six months. Both countries drive on the right, so there is no side switch. The single piece of preparation worth doing is to carry an International Driving Permit: Mexican rental desks ask for one routinely, and not having it can stall your booking even though roadside police rarely check. Arrange it in Sweden before departure.

The standards gap is the real adjustment

A Swedish driver is used to even surfaces, clear markings and predictable behaviour. Mexico runs two parallel networks. The cuota toll motorways are good and worth paying for. The free libre roads are rough — potholes, faded lines, livestock, and topes (speed bumps) that often appear with no sign at all. Hitting one of those at speed can wreck a low hire car. Whenever you pass through a village, slow to a crawl and read the surface ahead.

Speeds, and why the limit is the least of it

The posted limits are 40 km/h in towns, 80 rural, 110 on the motorway, but conditions should govern your speed long before the sign does. The firm rule worth keeping is to avoid driving rural free roads at night, when unlit vehicles and animals are hardest to see.

Alcohol and costs

The alcohol limit is 0.08 BAC — four times Sweden’s 0.02. The looser figure is misleading: cities run regular alcoholímetro checkpoints and penalties bite, so keep it at zero before driving. A speeding fine is roughly MXN 870-1,700 (≈ €45-90), varying by state. Petrol is about $1.12 a litre, and 911 covers all emergencies.

Mexico's 0.08 BAC is four times Sweden's strict 0.02. Despite the looser figure, city breath-test checkpoints are common and the safe choice is no alcohol before driving.
