Spanish drivers have the language on their side in Mexico, but the road rules differ — an International Driving Permit is recommended as the official translation, and the real hazard is the topes, unmarked speed bumps on the free roads. Motorways cap at 110 km/h, below Spain's 120.
Spanish drivers land in Mexico with one big advantage — every sign and police instruction is in Spanish, so nothing gets lost in translation. The catch is that familiarity hides real differences in the rules and the road surface.
The verdict for Spanish licence holders
Your Spanish licence is accepted, but Mexico is outside the EU mutual-recognition rules, so an International Driving Permit is recommended as the certified document rental desks and traffic police look for. Carry the IDP, your Spanish licence and passport together; the licence covers stays of up to 6 months. Arrange the IDP at home, as you cannot get one in Mexico. Topes — the surprise on the free roads
The defining hazard is the tope: a speed bump, often unpainted and unsigned, planted at the entrance to every village on the free (libre) roads. Spain marks and paints its bumps; Mexico frequently does not, so hitting one fast in a low rental can cost a tyre or the sump. Slow hard at any cluster of houses or roadside stalls — that is your warning. The toll motorways (cuotas) are smooth and free of topes; the parallel libre roads are not.
A lower speed cap and the alcohol margin
The motorway limit is 110 km/h, below Spain’s 120, with unsigned federal road defaulting to 100 by day and 90 at night, and 50 km/h on urban stretches; town streets follow state rules. Use the toll roads for distance — faster, safer, patrolled. Federal fines are 50-60 daily UMA up to 20 km/h over and 60-70 beyond, with state roads setting their own; estimate yours with the Speeding Fine Calculator. The alcohol limit is 0.08 BAC, looser than Spain’s 0.05, but city alcoholimetro roadblocks are routine at night, so keep it at zero.
