The verdict for Italian licence holders

You can drive in Mexico on your Italian licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. The IDP is the certified translation rental desks and police prefer to see; it is not always demanded, but carrying it removes any friction at a roadside stop. Keep the IDP, your Italian licence and your passport together, and get the permit in Italy before you fly.

No side switch — focus on the topes

Italy and Mexico both drive on the right, so there is no mirror to relearn. Spend that saved attention on the tope, the Mexican speed bump that is often unmarked and unlit, sitting on the approach to towns and villages. Hit one at the wrong speed and you can damage the car. Slow right down near any settlement and look for faded paint or a small warning sign.

Toll roads vs free roads

Mexico runs the tolled cuota highways, which are good, alongside the free libre roads, which can be rough and slow. Over long distances the tolls earn their cost. Limits are 40 km/h in town, 80 rural and 110 on the best highways, varying by state — lower than the Italian motorway speeds you are used to.

Speeding fines run about MXN 870–1,700 (approx. EUR 45–90) and vary by state. Fuel is roughly $1.12/litre, and the emergency number is 911.
