Mexico on an Irish Licence — Yes, but You Switch to the Right

Irish drivers face the same first-day challenge in Mexico that they do anywhere on the continent: the road has flipped. Add a uniquely Mexican hazard — the speed bump you never see coming — and the priorities for an Irish visitor become clear.

Can you drive on an Irish licence?

Yes. An Irish licence is accepted for short tourist stays and rentals in Mexico, with an International Driving Permit recommended as the official translation. Police and rental desks like to see it, and while it is not always demanded, going without can complicate a stop. Carry the IDP, your Irish licence and your passport together, and arrange the permit in Ireland before you travel.

The side switch comes first

Ireland drives on the left; Mexico drives on the right. This is the adjustment most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a car park, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or the reflex glance in the wrong direction. Give yourself an easy first hour on quiet roads rather than diving into Mexico City traffic.

Then learn the topes

Once the side feels natural, the next hazard is the tope — a speed bump, frequently unmarked, on the approach to towns and villages. Hit one at speed and you risk real damage. Slow right down whenever you near a settlement, and watch for faded paint or a small sign.

Roads, fines and fuel

Mexico’s tolled cuota highways are good; the free libre roads can be rough. Limits are 40 km/h in town, 80 rural and 110 on the best highways, varying by state. Speeding fines are typically MXN 870–1,700 (approx. EUR 45–90), fuel is about $1.12/litre, and the emergency number is 911.
