Mauritania is not a casual rental destination — it is mostly Sahara, and a car here means committing to long, lonely stretches between Nouakchott and the coast or the iron-ore towns inland. If you are an American planning to drive, the licence question is the easy bit; the terrain is what deserves your attention.

The verdict: your US licence works, but only with an IDP

You can drive in Mauritania on your American licence, but treat the International Driving Permit as essential, not optional. The US is not party to the same licence-recognition framework as most of Europe, so a Mauritanian official or rental agent has no obligation to read a standalone American card. No side switch — but the road is the obstacle

Here is the reassuring part: Mauritania drives on the right, the same as home. There is no muscle-memory battle at junctions or roundabouts. What replaces it is the surface. Away from the main N1/N2 highways, “road” often means graded piste or open desert track, and sand can bury a route between one visit and the next. A 4x4 with a local driver who knows the dune crossings is the norm for anything off the sealed network, and travelling in convoy is sensible for desert legs.

Speeds, and what the limits don’t tell you

But the number on the sign is rarely the binding constraint — drifting sand, livestock and unlit vehicles after dark are. Drive in daylight where you can, slow right down through villages, and carry water, fuel and a spare. Before you set off

Fill the tank at every reliable station — distances between them are long.
