The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in Mauritania on your Indian licence, with an IDP recommended to carry alongside it. Checkpoints are common on the main highways, and an officer who can read your permit is an officer you spend less time with. Arrange the IDP in India before departure — you cannot get one locally — and keep it with your licence and passport within easy reach.

The side switch comes first

India drives on the left; Mauritania drives on the right. Even on quiet desert roads this matters, because your instinct at a junction, a fuel stop or the rare roundabout in Nouakchott will pull you the wrong way. Spend your first hour deliberately checking the correct direction before each manoeuvre until right-hand traffic feels normal.

Distance and desert, not speed traps

This is the honest part: Mauritania does not publish dependable figures for fine amounts, so the advice that helps is practical, not numerical. Outside the paved routes you are driving in genuine desert — soft sand, no signal, and long stretches with no fuel. Never set off across open terrain without spare fuel, plenty of water, and ideally a second vehicle. On the sealed roads, livestock and slow lorries appear without warning, so drive to what you can see. The emergency number commonly cited is 112.
