Can a British Driver Drive in Mali? — IDP Recommended + Zero-Alcohol Rule

On the narrow licence question: yes, a British licence is accepted for driving in Mali and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. But it would be dishonest to write this page as a normal road-trip guide. The far more important point for any British visitor is that Mali has carried serious security and travel warnings across large parts of its territory, and self-driving in much of the country is not realistic. Check current government travel advice before you commit to anything, and treat the driving practicalities below as secondary to that.

Where driving does apply — chiefly around Bamako, the capital — the rules are straightforward but the conditions are not. Mali drives on the right, so as a British driver coming from the left you carry the usual side-switch risk in your first hours: roundabouts run the other way and your instincts pull you to the wrong lane. The alcohol limit is zero (0.0 BAC), well below the British 0.08, so there is no margin at all before driving.

For posted speeds, the figures available are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the few faster routes, but in practice surface quality, livestock, pedestrians and unlit vehicles set your real pace, especially after dark. Drive to what you can see, not to the sign, and avoid night driving where you can. The general emergency number is 112. Carry your passport, licence and IDP at all times, as roadside checks are routine.

This is one destination where a shorter, honest answer is the right one: the licence works, but the trip planning is dominated by safety, not speed limits.
